Community Leadership Project

​The Hoa Mau program aims to train individuals to be waʻa (canoe) practitioners. This opportunity is targeted for those who are interested in becoming waʻa practitioners for the purpose of teaching and perpetuating voyaging and navigation. This program is funded by the Administration for Native Americans (ANA), and the intention is to increase community engagement and volunteerism in the Koʻolau regions through a community leadership project.
Position Description 
  • Internship location: Kaʻalaea, Oʻahu 
  • Attend all program training dates. Mandatory opening training: March 13-15, 2023
    • Monday, March 13, 6:30am-1:30pm, 14th &15th, 2023: 8am-4pm
  • Mandatory Friday trainings 8:00am - 4:00pm 
    • Dates: 3/24, 3/31, 4/14, 4/21, 4/28, 5/5, 5/12
  • Additional 8hr day that fits your schedule
  • Graduation huakaʻi (trip) 3 days between July-September, 2023 - Dates TBD
  • This is an unpaid internship
Internship Eligibility - Applicants must:
  • Be of native Hawaiian ancestry 
  • Be available to volunteer every Friday, and one other day of the week (your choice of day)
  • Volunteer the entire 10 week session, March-May, 2023 - specific dates listed to the left 
  • Be at least 18 years of age by 1/1/23
  • Have your own housing and transportation
  • Physically able to do the tasks required
  • Pass a background check​
