Papahana Hoolauna

Picture
Papahana Hoolauna is a service generally available to public and private educational institutions and other programs and offers instructional classroom visits and waa experience days at Kualoa Regional Park.  Students and instructors who visit the canoe go aboard and learn first hand what it's like to be a voyager. All of KVAʻs programs highlight and emphasize math, science, and literacy. Papahana Hoolauna allows KVA to have greater impact, reaching a broader range of individuals on the island of Oahu and Hawaii. The project perpetuates Hawaiian cultural knowledge and appreciation, skills and values.

Hālau Holomoana is a year long program consisting of 180 hours of total instruction in the following areas: sail training, Hawaiian cultural protocol, Hawaiian history, introduction to maritime and ocean-based careers, college and career support, scholarship support, and field-trips to the local maritime industry.

Hālau Holomoana having garnered planning input and commitments of support from retired kūpuna who fulfilled successful maritime careers as well as skilled seamanship professionals, cultural practitioners and master navigators, reflects a promising inter-generational, community-based approach. Most importantly, Hālau Holomoana prepares youth for careers that provide a comfortable livelihood while also affording ample time away from work to give back to the community through lifelong learning and perpetuation of Hawaiian canoe culture.

Applications for school year 2020-2021 are now CLOSED.  Thank you!
